Driveway Prep in Central Ohio

Built from the Ground Up

Whether you are installing a rustic, quarter-mile gravel lane or preparing a residential footprint for expensive concrete, skipping the foundational dirt work guarantees failure. At Black Rain Earthworks, we build driveways the right way—focusing heavily on soil excavation, proper base compaction, and engineered drainage.

Driveway Types We Handle

  • Gravel Driveways: We handle complete, start-to-finish installations. From cutting the path and laying geotextile stabilization fabric to spreading and compacting the final top coat of crushed limestone.
  • Asphalt & Concrete Preparation: Paving contractors need a perfectly compacted, level stone base to lay their product. We perform the heavy excavation and base preparation, giving your paving team the perfect canvas.
  • Driveway Repair & Regrading: We repair washed-out lanes, eliminate persistent potholes, and cut new drainage ditches to revive old, failing driveways.

Central Ohio Service Areas

Constructing driveways in our region means dealing with freeze-thaw cycles and heavy spring rains. We build driveways designed to survive this specific climate. We actively build long rural lanes and execute residential subgrade prep throughout Central Ohio

The Preparation Process

Our installation process ensures decades of durability. We begin by excavating the organic topsoil—which retains moisture and causes sinking—down to the stable hardpan subsoil. Next, we install heavy-duty geotextile fabric. This crucial step prevents the clay from swallowing your expensive gravel over time.

We then lay coarse base stone (like #2s or #3s) and heavily compact it with vibratory rollers. Finally, we apply the top layer (like #57s or dense grade), making sure to create a "crown" in the center. This crown forces rainwater to run off the sides into parallel drainage ditches rather than pooling in the middle.
